Camouflage
New leaves learning to hide in the colour of city dust
Tea-brown wash settles like dust on a Delhi road.
Roots hang from the branches in thin dark threads.
Ink lines scratch the bark until it looks worn by many hands.
At the edge of the shade a red leaf opens.
Pale green blades lean into the light.
Everything new slowly takes the colour of the street.
The work
Meghna Naiker makes Camouflage in 2023, after a bachelor's degree in Painting at the College of Art, Delhi. At this time Naiker is looking closely at foliage. The work studies how plants compose themselves and how they exist in the city. Brown washes cover the surface like dust. Roots hang from thick branches. At the bottom, red and green leaves push forward. Naiker sees each new leaf merging into the city dust. The work also speaks of passing time.
In the artist’s words
“This is one of the works I made after my bachelor's. At the time I was engaging with foliage and the composition that nature has and how they exist in urban space. It felt like every new plant and every new leaf was merging and camouflaging itself in the city dust. It reminds us of passing time.”
