Cycad
An old trunk bends low while new leaves still curl upward
A trunk lies down like a sleeping animal, black and thick with scales.
At one end the leaves rise, sharp as broom straw.
Two young fronds still curl, small fists not yet open.
Thin lines rush across the white paper like slanting rain.
Every mark is a scratch that holds ink.
The plant is heavy and old, but it keeps reaching up.
The work
Meghna Naiker holds a Bachelor's degree in Painting from the College of Art, Delhi. She has recently completed a Master's in Visual Art at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Delhi. Her practice starts with patterns in nature. In Cycad, dense black lines build a heavy trunk that leans across the sheet. Spiky leaves burst from its top. Slanting strokes fill the air around it. Pencil notes below read "Drypoint" and "1/3". Naiker now looks at the patterns that people make and how they shape us.

My journey began with an exploration of patterns in nature — forms, rhythms, and repetitions that exist organically. Over time, this inquiry led me to question the patterns within human-constructed society — how every passing second subtly binds us to systems we rarely notice. I became deeply interested in how we are unconsciously ruled by these societal patterns — how every method of navigation, for…
