Part of previous series
Something old and slow grows across the paper
A dark crust spreads across wet grey paper.
Its plates curl at the edge like old leaves.
Thin gold cracks run between them.
Underneath, a rust-coloured skin is full of tiny black stitches.
A few white flecks catch the light.
Below, a cold green pool holds the weight of it all.
The work
Meghna Naiker made this work in 2023. It belongs to an earlier series. Her practice began with "patterns in nature". Here a dark form grows across grey paper. It looks like bark or lichen. Small black marks fill its brown underside. Pale lines crack across its top. A blue-green wash sits below it like a shadow. Naiker studied Painting at the College of Art in Delhi. She now holds a Master's in Visual Art from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Delhi.

I became deeply interested in how we are unconsciously ruled by these societal patterns — how every method of navigation, for…
