This is the charter the magazine is run by. It is a set of policies, not aspirations, and every one of them is inside the Foundation’s control.
Nothing is published without consent
No face, no work, no words — until the artist has signed a consent form that says plainly what we will publish, where, and for how long. Where an artist is under eighteen, a parent or guardian signs alongside them. An artist may withdraw consent for future publication at any time; we cannot unprint what is already out, and we say so before they sign.
Artists keep their work
Copyright stays with the artist, always. We take a limited, non-exclusive licence to publish the work in the magazine, on this site, and in material promoting the issue it appears in. We never take ownership and we never ask for it. The artist may sell, show and licence the same work anywhere else, at the same time.
No student ever pays us
Not to submit. Not to be featured. Not to be listed in the Catalogue. If anyone ever asks a student for money in our name, we want to hear about it that day.
The artist is paid on every sale
The artist sets the price and is paid within seven days of the sale completing. What the Foundation keeps goes back into running the store and publishing the next artist. Delivery is quoted separately and never comes out of the artist’s share.
The artist sees the article first
Every quotation and every fact is checked with the artist before publication. We do not show them the whole article for approval — that is not what a magazine does — but nothing they are quoted as saying goes out unverified, and nothing about their life goes out that they did not tell us.
Selection is anonymous
A panel of practising artists reads submitted work without the artist’s name, college or city attached.
At least a third from outside the metros
At least a third of the artists we feature will come from outside the eight largest metropolitan areas, and from state universities rather than the national institutes. We measure it across every twelve issues and publish the count, whether or not we hit it.
Photographs of people
We photograph artists in their studios. Anyone else who appears recognisably in a photograph is asked first. We do not publish a child’s image without a guardian’s written consent.
Corrections
When we get something wrong we correct it on the page, say what we changed, and leave the correction visible. Write to kkfo@kalyanikalakriti.in.
