Same series
The same small leaf, painted again until it becomes a forest
Branches the colour of old bone push through the green.
Leaves fall in small yellow strokes, one after another.
The dark ground rises in lumps and holds the light like wet stone.
At the edges the surface thins to grey mist and brown dust.
Look long enough and the repeat begins to breathe.
The work
Meghna Naiker makes this mixed media work in 2023. Pale branches cross a thick, rough surface. Small leaves hang along them in many shades of green. Some dark patches shine as if they are wet. At the edges the colour fades to grey and brown. Naiker studied painting at the College of Art, Delhi. She then completed a Master's in Visual Art at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Delhi. Her practice begins with patterns in nature. Here one leaf shape repeats again and again.
In the artist’s words
“My work began with a study of patterns in nature: forms, rhythms and repetitions that exist organically. Over time, this led me to question the patterns within human-made society. I became interested in how we are unconsciously ruled by these patterns. Every way of navigating shows us the way but also limits our ability to see differently.”
