Untitled
The city is behind them. The deer have not left.
A stag lifts its antlers into a sky the colour of pond water.
Three deer stand close, their bodies thin as tracing paper.
You can see the field through them.
Violet flowers crowd the lower corners, small and dense.
Behind, pale squares of buildings wait in the haze.
No one moves. The herd listens to something we cannot hear.
The work
Ajay Kushwaha was born in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh and grew up in Delhi. As a child he spent his time with the sky, animals and birds. He studied painting at College of Art Delhi and now studies for his Masters at College of Art Chandigarh. In this acrylic painting a stag and three deer stand in a green field. Their bodies are thin and see-through, so one shows through the next. Faint buildings rise behind them. Here the animals and the city share one space.
In the artist’s words
“My paintings are mostly inspired by nature, animals, birds, landscapes and flowers. I try to weave a story in my paintings. I try to show people the changes taking place in nature. Humanity is an integral part of nature. If there is no nature, life is not possible.”
