Dry sticks wait on the floor below a fading forest
Brown upon brown, the trees go thin as smoke.
A white light opens in the canopy and gives no warmth.
The hare runs flat to the earth. The deer only watches.
The edges of the picture ripple like heat over a road.
Below, the forest has already arrived: sticks, soil, leaves curled like old paper.
A yellow and black line tells us not to step closer.
The work
Ajay Kushwaha paints a forest in shades of brown. A deer stands among thin trees. A hare runs low across the ground and another animal looks back. A white light burns at the top. The painted cloth, with soft wavy edges, hangs from a real branch. Below it lies a pile of dry sticks on a bed of soil and fallen leaves. Kushwaha studies for his Masters at the College of Art Chandigarh. He wants his paintings to show how nature is changing.
