Musk deer
A deer with fangs steps through the golden dark
Amber light pours down between dark trunks.
The deer lifts one foreleg and does not look back.
Two white tusks rest against its lip.
Its breath leaves in violet threads.
Behind it a flower opens the colour of a bruise.
Paint runs down like late rain on bark.
The work
Ajay Kushwaha paints a musk deer in acrylic, mid-stride through a forest of amber light. Its small tusks show at the mouth. Purple waves trail from its breath and from behind its body where a pale flower opens. Kushwaha grew up in Delhi and studied painting at the College of Art there. He now studies for his Masters in Chandigarh. Animals, birds and flowers fill his work. He says nature "is the only thing that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the society."
