Barrier for whom
Three deer look back at us through a screen of grass
Green strokes fall across the deer like rain that forgot to stop.
Three faces wait with ears open wide as leaves.
Pink trunks bend behind them like veins in a hand.
The light is the yellow of an early field.
One deer looks away. Two look at me.
I cannot tell which side of the grass I stand on.
The work
Ajay Kushwaha uses acrylic to paint three deer in a green forest. Two look straight out at the viewer. The third turns its head to one side. Long strokes of green cross the picture like grass or a thin fence. Behind them stand trees with pink and purple trunks. Kushwaha lives in Delhi and studies for his Masters at College of Art Chandigarh. His paintings often show animals and the changes in nature. The title asks a simple question. Who is the barrier for?
In the artist’s words
“Through my art, I aim to depict the complex and symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world. My approach is to show humanity as an integral part of nature. I try to weave a story in my paintings. I try to show people the changes taking place in nature through my paintings.”
