Durga
Morning Light at Sarangkot
Snow catches the first light while the valley still sleeps
Brown paper, the colour of tea left to cool.
White pencil scratches snow onto the far ridge.
The sharp peak on the right stands alone and does not mind.
Below it charcoal gathers like smoke in the low ground.
A few thin trees wait for the sun to reach them.
The quiet here is not empty. It is full of morning.
The work
Durga is an artist from Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. In this drawing a line of snowy peaks rises above dark slopes and trees. Charcoal builds the shadows on brown paper. Fine white strokes pick out the snow where the light falls. Durga mixes looking with imagining and works between realism and impressionism. The mountains come from time spent with a grandmother who lives independently in the hills. There the artist learns that being alone can bring calm and strength.
In the artist’s words
“My grandmother is the main inspiration behind my work. Living independently in the mountains, she taught me resilience, simplicity and a deep connection with nature. There I discovered that solitude can be a source of strength, peace and self-understanding. Combining observation and imagination, I aim to show that loneliness does not always weaken us. It can become a source of courage.”
