Strength in solitude
A bare tree, a snowy peak and nobody else for miles
Night is the colour of ink left too long in the bottle.
A bare tree holds out its arms, brown as an old walking stick.
Behind it the peak wears its snow like a grey shawl.
No leaves. No birds. No lamp in any window.
The mist sits low in the valley and waits.
The old trunk stands in the cold and does not fall.
The work
Durga is an artist from Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. For a long time Durga felt lost and lonely and unsure of an artistic voice. Time with a grandmother who lives independently in the mountains changes that. "My grandmother is the main inspiration behind my work," Durga says. Here a bare tree reaches across a deep blue night. A snowy peak rises through the mist behind it. Painted in acrylic and oil at 76.2 × 101.6 cm, the work sits between realism and impressionism.
In the artist’s words
“My grandmother is the main inspiration behind my work. Living independently in the mountains, she taught me resilience, simplicity and a deep connection with nature. With her in the mountains, I discovered that solitude can be a source of strength, peace and self-understanding. Loneliness does not always weaken us. It can also become a source of courage.”
