Durga
A peaceful farewell
One small fire, a quiet river and a hill that keeps watch
The hill holds every green and the rust of dry leaves.
Grey stones lie at its foot like sleeping animals.
The river is the colour of old glass and does not hurry.
On the pale bank a few people stand close together.
One small orange flame is the brightest thing here.
Beyond them the mountains turn to mist and let go.
The work
A dark hill full of trees rises over grey rocks and a green river. On a pale bank a small group of people gathers around an orange fire. Mist hides the far mountains. Durga, of Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, paints this scene in oil on a wide canvas. The artist's grandmother lives independently in the mountains and is the main inspiration for the work. Durga mixes observation and imagination. The brushwork sits between realism and impressionism.
In the artist’s words
“My grandmother is the main inspiration behind my work. Living independently in the mountains, she taught me resilience, simplicity and a deep connection with nature. Working between realism and impressionism, I aim to show that loneliness does not always weaken us. It can also become a source of courage, growth and inner strength.”
