The Open Studio / Narender
Narender
We have to meet,but never
Two hands reach across the dark wood and stop short
The tree keeps its bark at the edges, rough as a knuckle.
Inside, the wood goes dark as tea left too long.
Small yellow bodies fall through the grain like seeds shaken loose.
A blue arm stretches across the whole width of the dark.
A pale hand lifts from a blue flower to answer it.
Between the two fingers lies a strip of bare wood.
The gap is the width of one breath.
The work
Narender is from Gurugram. He paints this work in oil on a slab of wood that keeps its rough outer edge. The centre is stained dark. On it, figures that look like jointed wooden dolls move across the grain. Small yellow figures tumble. A turquoise figure stretches one long arm towards a pale figure seated on a blue flower. Their hands reach out but do not touch. Narender works in painting, sculpture, installation, photography and performance. His work is mostly about hair loss and how people find their confidence again.
In the artist’s words
“Through my art, I show myself and the people whose experiences are like mine. The main subject of my work is hair loss, its challenges and their solutions. I try to show how this problem affects me and people like me. In the end, my work looks at how we can win back our confidence and face the challenges along the way.”
