Swinging in the bed
The pillow keeps count every morning
An orange bed, warm as a pressed sheet.
A blue man lifts his arms and opens his mouth wide.
Small blue friends hang from him, upside down, swinging.
Across the orange, thin dark hairs lie where they fell.
Grey all around, the bed floats like an island.
No one sweeps the hairs away.
He keeps swinging anyway.
The work
Narender comes from Gurugram. He paints and also makes sculpture, installations, photographs and performance art. His main subject is hair loss and how it affects him and people like him. In this acrylic painting on canvas from 2025, a blue figure stands on an orange shape with his arms raised. Four smaller blue figures cling near his arms and legs. Each body is cut into flat blocks of colour inside black lines. Thin dark hairs lie across the orange ground.
In the artist’s words
“Through my art, I show myself and people whose experiences are like mine. The main subject of my work is hair loss, its challenges and their solutions. I try to show how this problem affects me and people like me. My work looks at how we can find our confidence again and face the challenges along the way.”

- It is a very delicate time when a person's hair starts falling. He gets so worried about his hair that his first priority becomes his hair. He turns on his bed as if he is swinging. He faces anxiety, depression, loneliness and many other big problems. But even after that there is a light smile on his face which keeps him alive.
