Ania Kaushik
Surya Mandir, Konark
A sun temple waits under a cloud the size of a hill
Orange steps climb to a door the colour of strong tea.
The tower stacks its roofs like folded cloth.
A grey cloud leans on the sky, heavy as wet wool.
Thin white strokes trace its edges like chalk.
The ground is pale, almost pink, almost dust.
Nothing moves except the eye, going up.
The work
In this 2024 painting Ania Kaushik shows the Sun Temple at Konark in poster colour. The sheet is 29 × 41 cm. Kaushik's college is Banaras Hindu University and she is based in Ghaziabad. She likes to use a few colours so she can think about line and form. The temple is built from flat bands of orange, red and brown. Steps rise to a dark doorway. Behind the tower a grey cloud fills a mint green sky. She researches old buildings but draws them in her own way.
In the artist’s words
“I consciously prefer a limited colour palette, usually restricting my work to two to four colours. This allows me to focus on composition, line, form, symbolism and storytelling. I research architectural forms and traditional motifs but reinterpret them through my own perspective and visual vocabulary.”
