Shore Temple
A stone temple glows like honey under slow, flat clouds
The sky is the colour of turmeric left out in the sun.
Clouds stand behind the towers like folded cloth.
Stone climbs in steps, arch on arch, roof on roof.
Brown fills the doorways where the cool air waits.
Pink rocks gather at the foot like a low tide.
Nothing moves. The temple holds the warm hour still.
The work
Ania Kaushik of Banaras Hindu University paints the Shore Temple in poster colour. The work measures 28 × 40 cm. Kaushik keeps her colours few. Here she uses yellow ochre, browns and a soft pink. Two stepped towers rise against a sky of flat, rounded clouds. Each tier and small arch is drawn with care. Kaushik researches old buildings and their forms. But she begins every picture from her own imagination. The stone temple becomes warm, quiet and still.

In the artist’s words
My artistic practice is rooted in my deep connection with Indian culture, heritage, architecture, mythology, and the visual narratives of our ancient epics. I see art as a powerful medium through which stories, traditions, and cultural identities can travel beyond geographical and linguistic boundaries. My aim is to represent the richness and diversity of India to a global audience while presenting it through a contemporary and personal visual language. I work primarily with watercolour, poster colours, micron pens, and colour pens. I consciously prefer a limited colour palette, usually restricting my work to two to four colours. This limitation allows me to focus on composition, line, form, symbolism, and storytelling…
