Still here
Someone lies here so long the room begins to keep them
Red cloth flecked with turmeric yellow, heaped against a pale wall.
A bamboo panel tied shut with a white cord.
A blue sheet sags in the corner where the light gets in.
Under the quilt a shape, thin as a stain, the colour of the floor.
The walls are marked where shoulders have leaned for years.
Nothing moves. Something stays.
The work
Adarsh Mishra paints the corner of a small room in oil on board. A red quilt with yellow marks covers a shape that lies against the wall. A bamboo panel, a blue sheet and stained walls close in around it. Look longer and a figure appears under the quilt. It is thin as a shadow and almost part of the cloth and the floor. Mishra is from the College of Art in New Delhi. In Mishra's paintings, people and the places they live in slowly merge.
In the artist’s words
“I work with ordinary spaces, the kind that exist in the background of everyday life. Over time, the boundary between the figure and its surroundings has grown less defined. They begin to merge, the way a person and a place can become inseparable after years of shared silence. What remains visible is not identity. It is a weight. A stillness.”
