Foil for armour and feathers for a flag
Copper foil hangs over two bodies like a roof that will not hold.
Pink spreads across the wall and climbs into the next room.
There the light turns green and cold.
A man lies back on a white sofa with one foot in the air.
A tail of rainbow feathers slips toward the tiles.
A small green bag waits on the floor.
Behind him a winged figure stands and watches.
The work
Pritesh Bhowmick paints this work in oil across two large panels. Together they measure 228.6 × 335.2 cm. Bhowmick is from Nabadwip and trained at Sir JJ School of Art. His practice begins with personal memory and the lasting mark of sexual harassment. He uses loud props and extravagant accessories as signs of queer identity. They act as shields and as statements of difference. He builds his pictures by adding layers and peeling surfaces away. His figures move between real life and allegory.
In the artist’s words
“My practice is rooted in personal memory and lived trauma, particularly the enduring mark of sexual harassment. I use loud props, extravagant accessories and the delicate luminosity of gold leaf to reference queer aesthetics. They are shields of protection and affirmations of difference. I peel away surfaces and add new strata, mirroring how identities are revealed, concealed and reshaped.”
