Wrapped in plastic, a body falls back into gold
Cling film pulls from a statue's fist to a soft waist.
A body bends back until its fingers almost touch the floor.
Bangles at the wrist. Grey jeans gone silver in the wrap.
Gold foil spills like water that forgot to fall.
Old faces float in the dark above, half rubbed away.
One man stands behind. He holds on and looks straight at us.
The work
Pritesh Bhowmick paints this large canvas in oil and adds images by transfer. It is 259 × 198 cm. Bhowmick comes from Nabadwip. Bhowmick's college is Sir JJ School of Art. The work grows from personal memory and from the lasting mark of sexual harassment. Clear plastic film wraps a classical statue and a young person who falls back into a man's arms. Bhowmick builds in layers, adding surfaces and peeling them away. A body is shown and hidden at the same time.
In the artist’s words
“My practice is rooted in personal memory and lived trauma, particularly the enduring mark of sexual harassment. I see queerness not as a fixed category but as an evolving process of becoming. My process is one of layering and unveiling. I peel away surfaces and add new layers. This mirrors how identities are revealed, concealed and reshaped.”
