Sacred bloom

A white elephant walks under a night sky full of lotuses

Night pools inside the arch, deep as a well.
Pink lotuses rise on thin green stems and open above a slow white elephant.
Its cloth hangs heavy with red, yellow and green, the tassels still.
Black dots fall across its skin like seeds.
Around it a red wall blooms with white flowers.
At the top and bottom, small figures hold hands and dance along the edge of the page.

The work

Vidushi Singh paints Sacred Bloom in acrylic on a sketchbook page. Markers add the finer detail. She works in layers. First come basic shapes and colours. Then she adds shadows, highlights and small touches. Big brushes cover large areas and thin ones handle small parts. Singh does not plan everything before she starts. She changes things as the painting grows and swaps colours when another combination looks better. A student at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Delhi University, she is also learning when to stop.

In the artist’s words

“I didn't have everything planned before I started. Once I began painting, I changed things depending on how they looked. I worked in layers, starting with basic shapes and colours, then adding shadows, highlights and details. Sometimes I changed the colours because another combination looked better. I wanted the painting to feel natural and personal.”
