The Last pour
One twist of red, caught before it reaches the bottom
A navy bottle leans in from the left edge, heavy as a sleeping arm.
Red ribbons out of its mouth and folds over itself.
Inside the glass the wine breaks into pink curls and white sparks.
The wall behind is the grey of rain on slate.
The table below is a strip of bright sea green.
Everything waits for the stream to end.
The work
In this small gouache from 2023, a dark bottle tips its last red stream into a glass. Vidushi Singh builds the picture in layers. First come the basic shapes and colours. Then come shadows, highlights and details. Thin white lines catch the light on the glass and the bottle. Singh does not plan everything at the start. Colours change as the painting grows. Knowing when to stop is hard. Singh is from Kanpur. Singh's college is Deen Dayal Upadhyay College, Delhi University.
In the artist’s words
“I did not have everything planned before I started. Once I started painting, I changed things depending on how they looked. I often wanted to keep adding details, but adding too much made it look less balanced. I had to learn to step back and look at the painting as a whole.”
