Peacock – beautiful things don’t ask for attention…
Every eye on this tail was drawn one at a time
A blue neck rises from the bottom of the page and holds still.
Pencil lines pile up until the white paper stops showing through.
Behind the head, thin green strokes lean outwards, hundreds of them.
Each feather ends in an eye: lime, then brown, then a small blue pool.
On the breast, tiny scales sit close, one beside the next.
The bird looks away from us. It does not need to look.
The work
K. Shreya, from Stanley in Hyderabad, makes this peacock in 2024 with colour pencils on white paper. The aim is to show the beauty of the feathers. The bird turns its head to the left. Its deep blue neck rises from the bottom of the page. Behind it the tail opens in fine green strokes and rows of eyes. For Shreya the hardest part is drawing so many feathers neatly. Keeping the colours balanced takes time and patience.
In the artist’s words
“I was trying to draw a colourful peacock and highlight the beauty of its feathers. I used colour pencils on white paper and focused on adding bright colours and fine details. The most difficult part was drawing the many feathers neatly and making the colours look balanced and realistic. It took time and patience to complete all the details.”
