Ignoring the loop
A ribbed metal pipe ties itself in a knot it cannot leave
Blue the colour of old paint on a gate.
A pipe ribbed like a throat, bent until it meets itself.
Black crust breaks open over the ridges.
Flecks of gold sit where a hand pressed down.
The loop holds tight on its dark plinth.
One end looks away, as if the knot were not there.
The work
Narender bends a ribbed aluminium pipe into two loops that cross and lock together. He coats parts of the pipe in hard silicone. The blue and black surface is rough and broken in places. Small gold-coloured patches catch the light. In other places the bare ridges of the pipe show through. Narender lives in Gurugram. He works in painting, sculpture, installation, photography and performance. His work turns again and again to hair loss. He asks how people who live with it can find their confidence again.
In the artist’s words
“Through my art I show myself and people whose experiences are like mine. The main subject of my work is hair loss, its challenges and its solutions. I try to show how this problem affects me and people like me. My work looks at how we can win back our confidence and face the challenges along the way.”

- "A mental state in which a person accepts an undesirable situation in life to such an extent that escaping it becomes nearly impossible. When the artist finally emerged from this very condition, its impact still couldn't completely fade away. Upon stepping out, the artist observed that everything is essential—nature, humans, animals, and ongoing social growth—yet nothing is inherently beautiful, only utilitarian. While trapped in this loop, the artist could see nothing. That is why this sculpture features one head facing upward and another facing downward—where one head is shown looking beyond that loop, while the other remains trapped within it."
