Everyday silence
A face sinks into the wall above an unmade bed
Yellow wall, the colour of old turmeric on a steel plate.
Three paper squares hold their small shadows.
A bottle, a flask, a red frame wait on the ledge.
The blanket keeps the shape of someone's sleep.
The bag is packed or never unpacked.
In the plaster a face rises and goes under like a swimmer.
The work
In Everyday silence, Adarsh Mishra paints a lived-in room in oil. A blanket lies heaped on a bed. A black backpack leans on the wall. On a white shelf sit a pump bottle, a green flask and a small red frame. Paper notes cling to the yellow plaster. To the left a face fades into the wall. Mishra paints people as "quiet inhabitants" of ordinary spaces. Over time, the edge between figure and place has grown "less defined".
In the artist’s words
“I work with ordinary spaces, the kind that exist in the background of everyday life. Human figures appear in them, not as subjects but as quiet inhabitants. Over time, the figure and its surroundings begin to merge. What remains is not identity but something harder to name. A weight. A stillness. Something that stays after everything else has moved on.”
