Inner world
A dark beak breathes into a field of white
Red, deep as the inside of a closed eye.
A dark head curls in its own rings, covered in small white stitches.
A gold line runs through it like a vein.
At the tip of the beak, a breath of grey.
Then the white begins: thick, ridged, turning in slow circles.
Something is listening there or being heard.
The work
Inner world is a 2026 acrylic painting by Sayali Khanvilkar. A dark creature with a long beak curls inside bands of red and black. Fine pale strokes cover its body. Thin gold lines run along it. The beak meets a wide grey-white field. Here the paint is thick and rises in ridges that circle out like a fingerprint. Khanvilkar has always lived in Mumbai. She studied at Sir J.J. School of Art. Her work grows from form, space and the stillness of nature.

What the universe entails, that creates and nurtures us, imbibes in me the liberty, calm, stability, tactile pleasures and displeasures. The thought of my work is mainly on the present time, surrounding incidents, nature and personal experiences. Humanity is slowly drifting true source nature and this disconnection is deeply unsettling. In the relentless pursuit of progress and competition, we have trapped ourselves in an endless race that…
