Greed 1

Four hands reach for one small flower inside the smoke

A green hill, combed with dark pines.
The sky is laid on in thin whites, one over another.
A black burst opens like smoke with nowhere to go.
At its heart four hands close around a spill of yellow and pink.
Small black squares settle on the grass, each with one bright eye.
Lower down, a crowd of dots moves toward something it cannot see.

The work

Sayali Khanvilkar paints a green hillside under a pale sky. A dark burst spreads across the middle. Inside it, four hands reach for a small cluster of yellow and pink. Black squares drift over the land like windows or screens. The painting grows from a trip to Shimla, where she finds pollution among the mountains. Back in Mumbai she sees the same haze and a city growing "at the cost of leaving our environment behind." She builds the sky in veils of white paint, layer on layer, like the haze itself.

In the artist’s words

“During my trip to Shimla, I experienced layers of white, layers of pollution that stayed in my mind.”
