Nostalgia

A dark wheel turns slowly back toward the good days

Grey on grey, like a low sky that will not lift.
A wheel of dark spokes turns without a sound.
Two pale horns, stitched with tiny dots, rest on a coat of wavy fur.
A thin oar slides through them toward still water.
Rain falls in fine black threads.
At the bottom, grass stands in the charcoal dust and waits for a morning that has already passed.

The work

Sayali Khanvilkar has always lived in Mumbai. Life in this fast city has made her fonder of nature. Nostalgia is a drawing in charcoal and pencil, 121 × 228 cm. On the left, dark lines spread out like the spokes of a wheel. In the centre, two pale curved shapes rest on a mass of fine wavy marks. A thin rod cuts across them. Khanvilkar builds the surface from dots, short strokes and soft smoky tones. Her work can take her to "some good days in a nostalgic dreamy world."

In the artist’s words

“Some personal experiences such as detachment, attachment, pain and sorrow are reflected in my work. Through my work they take me to some good days in a nostalgic, dreamy world. The process of my work focuses on forms and space. My practice is based on symbolism and on forms and surfaces inspired by nature's freeness and stillness.”
