Satadru Sovan Banduri

36 x 60 inches

He reaches into the deep. The sea reaches back

The water here has edges that bend like cloth.
A boy kneels on nothing and lifts a small tool to an octopus.
Jellyfish glow pink at the centre, thin as paper lamps.
A fish with glass wings sits in his hair.
Under his knee a whale shark turns, spotted like a road at night.
He does not sink. He is asking something.

The work

Satadru Sovan Banduri paints in acrylic with gouache on canvas. Here the canvas has wavy edges, like a pool of night water. A boy in white kneels in the deep blue. He holds a small tool out towards an octopus. Jellyfish, squid, coral and a whale shark drift around him. A winged fish rests on his head. In Banduri's paintings, creatures of the sea share the canvas with the human body. He does not see the damage to nature as a matter of figures.
