Bad company
Someone above them is holding the strings
Grey cloud pools above a road of orange tiles.
Two hands lean out of it. The strings are thin as thread.
The small figures lift one foot each and wait.
A chameleon holds on to a dry branch, its green tail curled tight.
The octopus spreads its brown bands across the sea-green water.
Nobody on the road looks up.
The work
In Bad company, Nishkala Polamarasetty paints a road of orange and purple tiles that runs into grey cloud. Two small figures walk on it. Pale hands above them hold their strings. A chameleon grips a bare branch on the left. A striped octopus reaches across the right. Made in 2025, the work is watercolour on Canson paper. The artist's college is Andhra University in Visakhapatnam. Polamarasetty paints in two series. One sees trees, rivers and insects as teachers. The other looks for lessons in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

For as long as they can remember, they have felt drawn to the entities that inhabit this earth alongside us, the trees, the rivers, flowers, insects, and natural shapes. This connection is not merely a passing appreciation for the aesthetic beauty of the outdoors; it is…
