Fickle as a monkey
A chimpanzee in a red tie bets the house
Black air. Paper slips fall like late leaves.
A red tie lies flat down a white shirt.
The cards rest loose in a furred hand that has done this before.
A blue roof and a red car wait on green felt like small toys.
One square on the table says DEAD in thick black letters.
Around it all, pink spirals turn and turn.
The work
Nishkala Polamarasetty paints a chimpanzee in a dark grey suit and a red tie. The animal sits at a green gaming table with cards held close in one hand. Paper slips fall through the black air around it. On the table lie stacks of chips, a small blue-roofed house and a red car. One box on the felt reads "DEAD". A border of pink and purple spirals frames the scene. Polamarasetty works in gouache on Canson paper. The painting measures 71 × 56 cm and dates from 2025.

For as long as they can remember, they have felt drawn to the entities that inhabit this earth alongside us, the trees, the rivers, flowers, insects, and natural shapes. This connection is not merely a passing appreciation for the aesthetic beauty of the outdoors; it is…
