Whispers of the pond
A golden fish lifts off the board, its fins thick as cream
Night water, blue going purple at the edges.
A fish of pale gold turns, its fins ridged like wet sand.
You could trace its curve with one finger and feel every ridge.
Copper flowers drift from its belly like seeds let go.
At the corners, white lilies keep their small yellow lamps lit.
The pond says nothing. The fish listens anyway.
The work
Vidushi Singh lives in Kanpur and studies at Deen Dayal Upadhyay College, Delhi University. In Whispers of the pond, made in 2024, a golden fish stands out from the board in thick ceramic texture. Behind it, the water is painted in deep blue acrylic, with green lily pads and white water lilies. Singh does not plan everything before she starts. She builds her work in layers and often changes colours as she goes. When she makes a mistake, she works around it or paints over it.
In the artist’s words
“I didn't have everything planned before I started. Sometimes I had a clear idea in my mind, but once I started, I changed things depending on how they looked. When I made mistakes, I tried to work around them or paint over them instead of thinking they had ruined the painting. This made me less afraid of experimenting.”
