Divine embrace
Eyes closed, cheek to cheek, in a wash of yellow
Two faces lean together, eyes closed.
The yellow is the light of late morning, soaked into paper.
Blue pools under his chin like water in a cupped hand.
Red pen lines run across her cheek, thin as thread.
A peacock feather keeps watch from the corner.
Small white patches show where the paint did not go.
No one speaks. The ink holds them still.
The work
Vidushi Singh makes Divine embrace in 2024 on a small sheet of paper, 23 × 16.4 cm. Watercolour washes cover the page. Yellow fills the top and blue and green gather at the lower right. Black ink lines and colour pen marks sit over the washes. Singh is based in Kanpur and studies at Deen Dayal Upadhyay College, Delhi University. She does not plan everything before she starts. She changes things as the picture grows. She wants her work to feel natural and personal.
In the artist’s words
“I didn't have everything planned before I started. Sometimes I had a clear idea in my mind, but once I started painting, I changed things depending on how they looked. I wanted the paintings to feel natural and personal rather than just copying a reference exactly.”
