Neighbours in Silence
Every window has a grille. Nobody looks out
Rose brick turns grey as the light leaves.
Every window wears a grille, white lace made of iron.
One pane holds the last yellow of the day.
On the roof a plant leans toward nothing.
Below, the ground is a dark floor no one crosses.
A shadow of bars lies there and waits.
The walls stand close, like neighbours who stopped talking long ago.
The work
Adarsh Mishra paints ordinary spaces that sit in the background of daily life. Mishra is from the College of Art in New Delhi. In this oil painting from 2025, the backs of city buildings crowd together under a dark grey sky. No person appears. Metal grilles cover the windows. A water tank and potted plants stand on the roofs. The painting is tall and narrow at 152.4 × 71.12 cm. Mishra hopes that "whoever is looking might find something of their own there too."
In the artist’s words
“I work with ordinary spaces, the kind that exist in the background of everyday life, neither noticed nor remembered. These spaces hold memory long after memory has stopped being useful. I keep returning to this still point, not to explain it, but to stay with it.”
