Ania Kaushik
Kardameshwara Mahadev
A worn stone god, printed by sunlight in one deep blue
Blue settles into every crack of the stone.
The face is worn to a soft pale shape, like a thumbprint.
Many arms move, though the stone holds still.
Light did this work. It pressed the figure out of the dark.
Below, a plaque keeps the name in careful letters.
The god is cold blue and old white. It is still dancing.
The work
Ania Kaushik makes this work as a cyanotype from her own photograph. The picture shows a carved stone figure with many arms. Its face is worn smooth. Below it a plaque reads Kardameshwar and Kashi Khand in Devanagari letters. The print holds one deep blue and a pale ground. Kaushik, of Banaras Hindu University, usually works in watercolour and pen. She keeps to two to four colours. Here she keeps to one. The work measures 84 × 59 cm.
In the artist’s words
“It's made with the cyanotype technique. The picture was also originally clicked by me.”
