A door of night in a house built for the sun
Brown water dries into stone.
Each tier of the roof is one slow stroke laid over the last.
The door is the darkest thing on the page. It is a small square of night at noon.
The steps come down to meet my feet.
Behind the temple the sky is still wet. Blue runs soft into white.
The sun this house was built for is nowhere in the picture.
The work
Ania Kaushik paints a stone temple seen straight on. A wide flight of steps leads up to a dark doorway. Above it the roof rises in tiers to a round crown. Kaushik works in watercolour on a sheet of 21 × 29 cm. She keeps mostly to two colours: warm brown for the stone and soft blue for the sky. She says a small palette lets her focus on form and line. The work is from 2025. Kaushik lives in Ghaziabad. Her college is Banaras Hindu University.

In the artist’s words
My artistic practice is rooted in my deep connection with Indian culture, heritage, architecture, mythology, and the visual narratives of our ancient epics. I see art as a powerful medium through which stories, traditions, and cultural identities can travel beyond geographical and linguistic boundaries. My aim is to represent the richness and diversity of India to a global audience while presenting it through a contemporary and personal visual language. I work primarily with watercolour, poster colours, micron pens, and colour pens. I consciously prefer a limited colour palette, usually restricting my work to two to four colours. This limitation allows me to focus on composition, line, form, symbolism, and storytelling…
