Self2
Two quiet people, one thorny seed and the feelings between them
Green gathers at the bottom like a pond after rain.
At the top it thins to the yellow of a ripe lime.
A seed stands in the middle, its edge all thorns.
One small person carries roots inside the head.
Another keeps a stone of light in the chest.
Leaves drift past them and do not land.
The work
Hemlata Kantilal Patil is a printmaking artist from Nashik. In Self2 the ink sits on the paper in one rough, rounded shape. Green deepens towards the bottom and turns yellow at the top. Fine white lines show through it. Two figures face each other across a large spiked seed. One has threads running from the head down the body. The other holds a seed in the chest. Patil makes prints to understand her own feelings about how we grow, hold on and let go.
In the artist’s words
“I am a printmaking artist from Nashik. My work is printmaking on paper, mostly around nature and human connection. I make it to understand my own feelings better: how we grow, hold on and let go. These ordinary things hold a lot of memory for me and I don't want them to be forgotten.”
