A hollow tree holds a yellow heart inside its trunk
A tree opens its chest and shows a yellow room.
White lines turn inside it like a thumbprint, like water around a stone.
Brown seeds bristle on their stems and wait on square stools.
Two green ones stand closer and cooler, almost listening.
The bark is printed in tiny crosses, a net that holds the dark.
Everything hangs from one body and nothing falls.
The work
Hemlata Kantilal Patil is a printmaker from Nashik. She studies at K.K. Wagh College of Visual Art. Patil makes prints about nature and human connection. In this print a wide tree spreads its bare branches across the paper. Its trunk opens in the centre. Inside, fine white lines curl around a glow of yellow edged in green. Spiky forms hang from the branches on thin stems. Each one rests on a heavy block. The brown and green ink looks like bark. In pencil below the image Patil marks the print 1/4.
In the artist’s words
“I am a printmaking artist from Nashik. I make prints about what I see and feel around me, mostly around nature and human connection. I make them to understand my own feelings better: how we grow, hold on and let go. These ordinary things hold a lot of memory for me and I don't want them to be forgotten.”
