Wings of Hope
A butterfly that already has everything it needs
Grey pencil fills the wings like smoke that has stopped moving.
The body is dark ink, ringed with thin pale bands.
Two antennae curl at the tips like young fern.
White petals open around small round centres.
The words lean and loop across the paper.
The last word is the biggest. It says fly.
The work
Riya studies at Guru Nanak Girls College in Yamuna Nagar. In Wings of Hope she brings drawing and calligraphy together on one page. A butterfly rests above a small cluster of flowers. Beside it, a line of words tells the reader to fly. She draws the outlines in ink pen and shades the wings and petals with pencil. She mixes several lettering styles in one line. Some letters she draws again and again until she is satisfied with them.
In the artist’s words
“I wanted to make my work look attractive while keeping the message clear and easy to understand. I tried to keep the design balanced so that the writing and decoration work well together. Sometimes I had to repeat letters until I was satisfied. It taught me to be patient and not give up.”
