Janani
What holds within us (II)
The elder's hand still holds the string the birds rest on
Brown paper, the colour of a parcel kept too long.
White thread runs from a smooth palm to a creased one.
A ring sits on a thin finger below the knuckle.
Small birds wait on the line as if it were a wire outside a window.
Two lift off.
Pull too hard and the shape falls apart.
Hold it still and it stays.
The work
Two hands play a string game. One hand is young and smooth. The other is old and lined. This is the second moment in a bond that Janani draws across her works. The elder is no longer there. The younger one carries the care forward. Small birds rest on the string. Hidden in the drawing is a shape like a home with birds flying around it. Janani builds each image slowly in pen, line by line. She is a 2025 graduate of Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.
In the artist’s words
“I was trying to understand how memories and emotions stay with us even when the actual moment is gone. Memories aren't perfect or fixed. They change as we remember them. I wanted to turn something very personal and difficult to explain into something visual, while leaving space for other people to find their own experiences in it.”
