The Open Studio / Gungun
Gungun
Virat Kohli
Only the face stays grey. Everything around it takes colour
Saffron at the top, green at the bottom, a white band for the eyes.
The face is pencil grey, rubbed soft at the cheek.
Every hair of the beard is a small dark mark.
The cap and shirt are blue, as loud as a stadium.
He looks up, past the clip, past the edge of the sheet.
Whatever he sees there, he keeps it quiet.
The work
Gungun studies at Jimeti in Yamuna Nagar. This portrait of Virat Kohli begins in pencil and charcoal. The face, beard and neck stay in soft greys. Then colour comes in. Gungun uses colour pencil and colour charcoal for the blue cap, the blue shirt and the flag behind him. The saffron, white and green bands sit flat and calm. Against them the grey skin stands out. He looks up past the top of the sheet. The work is from 2024.
In the artist’s words
“I was trying to capture a mood and a moment that felt too subtle to put into words. I wanted the piece to feel honest, personal and easy to connect with. Apart from pencil, I used colour pencil and colour charcoal in the clothes and background. I hope you feel the same quiet connection I felt while making it.”
