URBAN LADER
A barefoot man crosses the rooftops with one suitcase
Orange turban, red scarf, white cloth against a sky of storm blue.
Bare feet step on the tops of houses, green and ochre and rust.
The suitcase leans back, heavy with somewhere else.
A street lamp bends to look at it and pours down yellow light.
Below him, small dark windows keep their quiet.
He does not look down.
The work
Uttam Prajapat paints a man in an orange turban and white clothes. He walks barefoot across the roofs of small coloured houses. He pulls a suitcase behind him. A street lamp bends down and lights it. The work grows from Vatera village in the Sirohi district of Rajasthan. There, mining in the Aravalli hills pushes people from their land. In this acrylic painting from 2024 Prajapat shows migration as a forced move. His college is Sir JJ School of Art, Architecture and Design in Mumbai.
In the artist’s words
“Migration is approached not merely as movement but as a forced condition, an outcome of dispossession and ecological imbalance. His work reflects on how such displacement disrupts not only physical habitation but also cultural continuity and a sense of belonging.”
