Untitled
An open door, a band of light and nobody home
Light comes in sideways and lies across the wall like a long plank.
The door stands open. Inside it the dark is soft and thick.
Charcoal grey, then paler grey, then the white of paper breaking through.
Small flakes of light sit on the floor like spilled salt.
Someone left this door open.
The room is still waiting for them to come back.
The work
Nitya Bhaumik Joshi draws the rooms of the home where she grew up. First she walks through it with a camera. She looks at where objects stand and how light falls on the floor. Then she turns her sketches into larger drawings. Here an open doorway stands beside a wall crossed by a wide band of light. No one is in the room. Charcoal and pencil add texture: lines, gaps and patterns. The drawing is from 2026. Joshi studied at Anant National University in Ahmedabad.
In the artist’s words
“In this series I explored the feel of human presence through mundane objects and spaces. Can human presence be felt without any literal human depiction? I used my own home as the subject. I photographed it, sketched it and translated the sketches into larger drawings. Texture added depth to my work through lines, gaps and patterns.”
