DEBJIT GHOSHAL
Untitled
Blue rubbed thin, white left whole, like light through broken walls
Blue pressed hard, then dragged until it thins to mist.
White blocks stand in it like shut doors.
A few drops fly loose at the edge.
One dark spot sits low, a coin of blue.
The surface shows its grain through the paint.
Somewhere a street is being remembered wrong.
The work
Debjit Ghoshal studies at the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship in Uttarpara. As a child Ghoshal could not talk easily and spoke instead through cut paper, drawings on walls and shapes made from dough. That habit stays in this small mixed media work, only 10 × 15 cm. Deep blue paint drags across a pale ground. Clean white shapes break through it like cut pieces. Ghoshal watches streets, buildings and textures. Familiar forms are broken so a place sits between what is real and what is remembered.

After that I took the practice seriously. From childhood I was not able to talk fluently as an normal person, so I expressed myself or my expressions through cutting papers, by drawing on walls, making something by using dough by that time I observe the everything , nature to human behavioral changes and also environments around me—architecture, streets, structures, textures, and changing cityscapes—and transform these observations into layered visual compositions. I work with different mediums and techniques, including watercolour, gouache,…
