Untitled
A crowd with no faces, only arms, shoulders and caution
Grey-blue air presses between shoulders.
A white vest, a black shirt, arms folded tight.
Skin the colour of baked clay, brushed flat and warm.
Someone lifts a hand to the back of a head.
No face turns to meet you.
Only elbows, collars, short dark hair.
You stand in the crowd and feel the looking.
The work
Khushi Sahay paints crowds without faces. In these acrylic paintings on canvas, figures stand close together. Arms fold. A hand rises to a head. We see sleeves, shoulders and the back of a neck, but never an eye. Sahay comes from Bokaro Steel City. Sahay's college is The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. The work grows from lived experience and from watching society. It asks how women learn from girlhood to stay aware of being watched. Flat shapes and muted colours keep the focus on gesture.
In the artist’s words
“These works depict fragmented, closely arranged figures that create a sense of crowded, tense space. By cropping and obscuring identities, the focus shifts to body language and gesture. Through flattened forms and muted tones, the paintings minimise detail to emphasise psychological states rather than individuality. They reflect on how stereotypes shape female and male experiences of visibility and vulnerability.”
