Riya
“…unfortunately, I am just a shadow.”✨
When someone deserves the universe and you are only a star
Black ink on pale paper with a little blue at the edge.
The word "the" squeezes in late, like a guest at the door.
"Universe" leans and swells. "Unfortunately" stands straight and thin.
A line runs out from "star" like a loose thread.
It ends at a head full of small points of light.
Only the mouth is left, quiet and closed.
The work
Riya studies at Guru Nanak Girls College in Yamuna Nagar. Riya makes this drawing in 2026 with an ink pen on paper. Thin capital letters sit beside thick flowing script. A small word "the" slips in over "deserve". Riya chooses each lettering style and plans where every word goes. Some letters are drawn again and again until they look right. Below the words a figure stands with stars where the top of the face should be.
In the artist’s words
“I enjoyed choosing different lettering styles and thinking about how the words should be placed on the page. I tried to keep the design balanced so that the writing and decoration work well together. Sometimes I had to repeat letters until I was satisfied. It taught me to be patient and not give up when something did not look perfect.”
