Unbound Connection VI
A woman lives inside the glasses, the rolling pin, the pot and the shoe
Rust, peach, mustard, moss. Four pieces hold each other tight.
A woman curls inside a pair of pink glasses. She looks out twice.
Another rests in the pale wood of a rolling pin.
Her hair turns in slow rings, like thread around a spool.
A yellow pot lies on its side. A shoe stands empty of its foot.
Around them the dark ground cracks like an old floor washed again.
The work
Shreya Shukla grew up in a rural home in Uttar Pradesh. There she watched how closely people live with the objects of their daily chores. In Unbound Connection VI four puzzle pieces lock together on a dark ground. Each piece holds a woman inside a common thing: a pair of glasses, a rolling pin, a pot and a shoe. Shukla works with acrylic colours and hand embroidery on sun board. In her current work she uses the Chikankari jali and running stitches she learned from her mother and grandmother.
In the artist’s words
“Growing up in a rural home, I saw how closely people are connected to their daily chores and simple household objects. In my current mixed-media work I use Chikankari embroidery, especially the Jali stitch and running stitch, taught to me by my mother and grandmother. Each thread is a piece of the love and heritage passed down to me.”
