Shreya Shukla
Unbound Connection I
The red earth of a village wall, combed into living lines
Red earth moves like water around a stone.
Each line bends and does not break.
Two pale rings press close, a pair of eyes, two seeds in one pod.
Inside, cream shapes rest like fish asleep in shallow light.
At the bottom a small whorl turns, a knot in old wood.
The colour of a floor washed at dawn, still warm under bare feet.
The work
Shreya Shukla grew up in a rural home. There she watched the women of her family use geru, a natural earth pigment, to wash, protect and decorate the walls and floors. In Unbound Connection I she brings that red earth onto paper and joins it with acrylic. Fine lines flow across the sheet like grain in wood. Two rounded forms meet at the centre and seem to hold small worlds inside. Shukla is a graduate of the University of Allahabad and works in Kanpur Nagar.
In the artist’s words
“I was always fascinated by geru, a natural earth pigment. I watched the women in my family use it to wash, protect and decorate our home's walls and floors. Today I use geru to bring that raw texture into my work and keep those memories alive. Joined with acrylic paint, it creates a quiet conversation between traditional roots and modern life.”
