Traces of a Deluge
Look through the lock and the flood has already passed
A green door, rubbed thin by years of weather.
The keyhole is the only way in.
Inside, a grey cloth falls like heavy water.
Hands at the top still hold on to it.
Below, a body rests on broken stones.
The flood has gone. Only its marks stay.
The work
Siddharth has lived between family homes and rented spaces. In those years a key came to hold memories, duties, hopes and the wish for a settled place. Locks and keys now return again and again in the paintings. In this small square oil painting from 2025, a keyhole opens in a wall of worn green paint. Through it we see a dark hanging cloth and a figure lying on stones. The colours inside are earthy. The rough texture comes from the rhythm of the brush.

In this painting, I wanted to show the story of an ordinary man whose house was flooded by the Yamuna. He is lying on the road because he has lost his home. I showed this scene through a keyhole because I wanted people to look into the life of someone whose struggles often go unnoticed.
