Tip of the iceberg
One face hangs upside down while the other turns toward you
A blue face hangs upside down, its hair a knot of ink-dark lines.
Below it, a yellow face leans in, warm as late afternoon on a wall.
A green collar folds between them like a shared coat.
Red seeds spin in one corner. Yellow marks scatter in another.
The water has dried in soft tidelines.
Two heads, one sheet of paper, no word spoken.
The work
In this 2024 work, Khushi Aggarwal of Ghaziabad sets two faces head to head. One hangs upside down in cool blues. The other turns in warm yellow and orange. A green shape folds between them. Aggarwal lays down watercolour washes, then draws over them in colour pencil. Fine hatched lines build the hair. Her college is Amity University. In her statement she says her self-portraits "convey the isolation as well as community". She borrows from printmaking and drawing for "thoughtful and calculated distortions".
In the artist’s words
“My work is about identity as an umbrella term. This includes community, individuality and day-to-day consumption. My self-portraits convey isolation as well as community. With my paintings, I break away from traditional painting elements and borrow from printmaking, sculpture and drawing to keep expressing myself through thoughtful and calculated distortions.”
