The Orange
A piece of orange held up where a face should be
Yellow and green squares stack like tiles in an afternoon room.
Two blue feet press together, caught in a net of lines.
Plum shapes fold over everything, warm and heavy.
Pink hands lift a curl of orange to the eye.
The pith shines white, a small private sun.
Look closer and the squares only multiply.
Someone is here, kept soft, kept safe.
The work
In The Orange, Bhaskar Thakur paints a close, private moment in oil on a small canvas. The whole picture is built from small squares of colour, like a photograph blurred on a screen. Two feet in blue net stockings rise at the top. Two hands lift a piece of orange over a face. Thakur's work draws on talks and trust with other queer people. The squares keep the scene soft so no one is forced into view.
In the artist’s words
“I soft-focus everything in my work as a deliberate way to push back against a world that demands everything be clear-cut and locked into rigid boxes. Obscurity is my political stance. It is a refusal of fixed appearances and binary truths. I want to create spaces that feel familiar yet unsettled, where identity is simply sensed rather than loudly declared.”
